The band knew a few classics well enough to wing it, so when they came back from their break Jack was out front, as comfortable with that crowd of soccer moms as with the tattoos and piercings at Spin.

Lifting the mike from the stand, he ran the cord through his fingers. “Hey everybody.”

All eyes turned toward him. He shook back his hair, flashed that smile, and around the room every woman went still. “Dan asked me to sing a few songs for his beautiful bride. I hope you’ll bear with me, I haven’t sung these in a while.

“First, though, I want to thank Dan and Celia for inviting me and my girlfriend Lil to share this day. Without a doubt, this is the best wedding I’ve ever been to. I hope you two are as happy every day of your lives as you are today.”

With that, he stepped back, said a word to the band. The drummer clicked his sticks, and they broke into “Suspicious Minds.”

Jack sang it better than Elvis. And he had the moves too. Watching the band, I saw their expressions morph from bored, to stunned, to totally into it.

Jack must have felt them come alive behind him, because he nodded to the guitar player, who grinned back at him from ear to ear. Everyone else was into it too, bopping and singing, clapping along like they were at a concert. Especially Celia. Dan stood behind her, hands on her shoulders, staring at Jack like he’d never seen him before.

Jack ran through “Blue Suede Shoes,” “Hound Dog,” and “Heartbreak Hotel” without a pause, then he stuck the mike in the stand and dropped a deep bow to Celia.

Two hundred people whistled and clapped and stomped their feet. Someone called for an encore and a hundred voices joined in. Jack shook his head, waved once, and crossed the room to me.

“Was it okay?” he wanted to know.

“Mmm-hmm,” I hummed, utterly beguiled, while the last atom of my soul that didn’t already belong to him fell to the floor at his feet.

The singer wisely decided not to follow Jack’s act too closely, so the band took another break. The guitar player started in our direction, but a wave of bodies was already sweeping toward us. Before he could reach us, we were pinned to the wall by people shaking Jack’s hand, gushing that he should go on The Voice.

Jack had been in this kind of crush many times, but I hadn’t. I felt like all the air down at my level was being sucked away before I could draw it in.

Noticing my wide eyes and white cheeks, Jack wrapped an arm around my waist. Spotting the guitarist on the fringes, he beckoned to him and the guy made his way to us, getting on my other side as Jack shouldered politely but firmly through the crowd and onto the balcony.

Drawing me into a corner, he turned his back to the crowd, discouraging anyone who started our way. “Thanks,” he said, extending his hand to the guitarist.
